Social Media: Don't Believe The Hype

Ashley Jefferson

Compare.jpg

Social media is everywhere. Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook – whichever you prefer, most of us login to at least one of these apps every day and probably multiple times a day. (Yes, I’m guilty too!) We often lose track of how many times we swipe, like, retweet and comment – as we scroll through and refresh our newsfeeds. Social media can be fun – we use it to stay in touch with friends and family, share funny videos, stay up to date on celebrities and sports teams that we like and of course post some selfies and snaps of our own.

However social media can also be a bad thing especially when we let it consume us. Do we spend more time online than doing work? Are we more likely to remember who commented on our photo rather than what we ate for breakfast? Even worst, are we letting social media affect how we feel about ourselves? For instance, if someone posted a selfie and it got more likes than yours – would you let that cause you to question how you look? Or maybe a friend posted a picture in an expensive car, would that make you jealous – even a little bit?

2 Corinthians 10:12 (AMP) says “[…] When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they lack wisdom and behave like fools.”

Just think about it, if you found out that the expensive car in the photo was just a rental or maybe that the selfie was photoshopped, would you feel kind of foolish being jealous? One thing we fail to realize a lot of times is that what people post on social media isn’t always accurate.  I’m not saying that everything that’s posted online is fake but at the end of the day, we all pick and choose what parts of our lives we want to share or not and people can decide to share the truth or to make things up to make their life appear better.

Social media is great - but we can’t be consumed by it and we can’t use it as a means to measure our self-worth. Remember, our worth comes from God and with Him, there’s no comparison.

Pretty Is As Pretty Does

Ashley Jefferson

You ever met someone and their outfit of the day was fabulous from head to toe but their attitude was horrible and you're left thinking, "How could someone so pretty be so ugly? It reminds me a lot of the phrase "Pretty is as pretty does." I remember hearing some variation of that saying as a kid but it wasn't until I got a little older that it really made sense.

For all the girls out there who spend the majority of their day in front of a mirror or taking selfies, I've got news for ya - looks aren't everything. No matter how much effort we put into how we look, it's our personality, our character and how we treat people that determines whether or not they want to be around us.

Yes God created us beautifully and there is nothing wrong with embracing that in our style, hair and makeup. However it becomes a big problem when we put so much effort into the outside that we neglect the inside.

The Bible says in Proverbs 31:30, "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised."

Ladies we are so much more than our looks. Yes...I'm talking to you - you are more than your 22 inch Brazilian weave, more than your favorite Mac lipstick, more than your fresh out the salon manicure, more than your straight off the runway clothes - yes you are so much more than all of that.

The saying is true - "It's what's on the inside that counts." And nothing counts more on the inside than Jesus Christ. A true relationship with God is the first place you should start. With Him, your true beauty will shine from the inside out.

Don't Put Your Selfie At Risk

Ashley Jefferson

Selfies, they're all fun and games right? That is until somebody gets hurt.

According to Mashable, a new report says that in 2015, selfies have killed more people than sharks! This year alone, 12 people have died in selfie accidents, compared to only eight people who have died from shark attacks.

The average person may take a quick photo while on vacation, maybe out with friends, or maybe because they like their outfit of the day. But nowadays you'll find people going to great lengths just to get the right shot.

Some people have taken selfies with wild animals, high in the air, or even with weapons. Sadly in the world we live in, many of these photos have gone viral. What's sadder though is that lives are being put at risk and even worse, some lives have even been lost...all in the name of a selfie.

I'm sure the 12 people who have died this year, as well as the 11 others who died in 2014,  didn't anticipate their actions leading to death. But in light of that, it reminds us that life is precious. Life is a gift from God - something that we should not take for granted and that we should handle with care.

And when you're willing to put your life in danger, all to take a "cool selfie," it begs the question, is the risk really worth it?

Every Day Beautiful

Ashley Jefferson

It's Wednesday, which means as you scroll through your Instagram timeline, you're bound to see plenty of pics of beautiful women of all ages and races - some famous and some not.

Maybe someone picked you or maybe not. But as you look at all the #wcw posts, do you find yourself comparing how you look to the picture in front of you?

Maybe she has longer hair? Maybe her eyebrows are on fleek? Maybe she has lighter skin? And before you know it, you start picking yourself apart.

Psalm 139:14 says, "I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well."

Understand this, you will never look like the next girl and you were never meant to. Each and every one of us is uniquely hand-crafted by God. Don't let someone else's beauty cause you to question your own and if no one else tells you, remember you are beautiful this Wednesday and every day.
